Terms, privacy & accessibility
Free general education, used at your own risk. We collect nothing about you, and we try to make the course usable by everyone. Last updated October 9, 2026.
1. Terms of use and disclaimer
By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.
Educational content only
Everything here is general information about seeing, choosing and testing color in a home, written for the people who live there. It is personal education: it does not certify anyone as a color consultant or designer, does not teach the running of a consulting business, and does not claim equivalence with, affiliation with, or endorsement by any design school, color-science organization or paint manufacturer whose public materials are referenced. Completing a module records that you marked it as read and practiced; it is not a qualification.
Colors on screen are not paint
Every swatch, slider, proportion bar and room illustration on this site is an approximate representation drawn on a screen to teach a relationship. The materials image on the home page is illustrative: it shows the idea of gathering samples together, not any particular product, and its colors on screen are approximate. It is not a simulation of any paint product under any real light source, and no on-screen value (including any hexadecimal value you type into a tool) identifies a paint color, an undertone, a manufacturer's light reflectance value, or a match between brands. Paint decisions require physical samples observed in your own rooms, as Module 9 describes. Room drawings are schematic illustrations; they are not real projects and not evidence of how any paint will look.
Product information
Where the course reports what a manufacturer says about its own products (sample sizes, sheens, where to find a light reflectance value, how a sampling product behaves), it reports the manufacturer's public page as read on the date given in the source library. Products change; the can, the technical data sheet and the manufacturer's current page govern. Brand and product names belong to their owners and are used only to identify them. The site receives no payment, commission or free product from any manufacturer or retailer, and names no product as "the best."
Not a painting, renovation or safety manual
The course teaches design decisions, not surface preparation, painting technique, ventilation, ladder safety, or the handling of hazardous materials. Homes built before 1978 (in the United States) may contain lead paint, and older homes may contain asbestos in some materials; disturbing either is regulated and can be dangerous. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on every product and consult qualified professionals and your local authorities for anything beyond choosing a color. Renters should confirm what their lease permits before changing anything.
Personalized content and tools
The "Your home" boxes and the workbook tools are generated automatically from what you type, using general rules of thumb. They are your own notes and provisional plans, not recommendations of record, and the site labels them that way. Any budget figure is your own estimate.
Third-party links
The site links to design schools, color-science organizations, government agencies, paint manufacturers and other resources we found useful, with the date each link was checked. We do not control those sites, do not endorse or guarantee anything on them, and are not responsible for their content, availability, accuracy or practices.
No warranty; limitation of liability
The site and its content are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Field Assembly LLC, Reassembly and the people who made this site are not liable for any loss or damage, direct or indirect, arising from your use of the site or reliance on its content, including but not limited to the cost of paint, materials, furnishings or labor, dissatisfaction with a result, loss of data, or any injury or property damage. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of this may not apply to you.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising from the site or these terms will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Massachusetts, and you consent to their jurisdiction.
Changes and availability
We may change, pause or remove the site or any part of it at any time without notice. We have no obligation to keep it available or up to date.
2. Privacy
Short version: we do not collect, store or sell any information about you.
- No accounts, no sign-up, no email. There is nothing to join.
- No analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no cookies. The site sets no cookies and includes no third-party scripts, pixels or embedded content. Fonts are served from this site, not from a font service.
- Your setup and workbook stay on your device. What you type into the setup form, the workbook tools and the progress checkboxes is saved only in your browser's local storage so the site can show it back to you. It is never transmitted to us. Clearing your browser data, or using the clear buttons, deletes it; the export feature writes a file to your own device and nowhere else. Because browser storage can be lost, export anything you need to keep.
- Share links contain your setup answers only. The "copy a link" feature encodes the setup form's answers into the web address itself so you can open them on another device or send them to someone you share the home with. Anyone who has that link can read those answers, so leave out anything private, such as a street address. The workbook (inventory, photos you mention, samples, budget) is never encoded into a link, and the site has no photo upload.
- Hosting logs. The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which, like any web host, processes technical request data (such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. We do not use that data to identify or track visitors.
- Links to other sites take you to services with their own privacy practices.
- Children. The site is not directed at children under 13 and we knowingly collect no information from anyone.
3. Accessibility
We want this course to be usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification or high contrast, and people who see some colors differently. The site is built to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. Specifically:
- Semantic HTML with headings, landmarks, lists and tables with header rows; a "skip to content" link; visible keyboard focus on every control; the mobile menu can be opened and closed from the keyboard.
- Every form field has a label; checkboxes and radio buttons are labeled; toggle buttons report their pressed state.
- Text and interface colors meet contrast minimums in both light and dark modes, and information is never conveyed by color alone: every swatch carries a text label, every comparison says in words what changed, and the room illustrations have text descriptions.
- The color exercises sit on a fixed neutral gray surround that does not change with the light or dark theme, so the exercise is the same whichever theme you use.
- Printed pages keep names, codes, roles and notes next to each swatch, so a grayscale or inaccurate print still records the decision.
- Text resizes with browser settings; layouts reflow to narrow screens; no content flashes or moves on its own; reduced-motion preferences are respected.
Known limitations: the color comparison exercises are, by nature, visual; the text describes what to look for and what each example shows, but a person who cannot perceive the particular difference being demonstrated will have to take the description on trust, and the course says so where it matters. The course's advice on light-dark contrast in a home is general: it often helps, but vision needs vary, so it asks you to check real edges in place with the people who need them. Wide tool tables scroll horizontally on small screens; the editable tools depend on JavaScript and browser storage; printable pages depend on your browser's print settings. If anything on this site is hard for you to use, please tell us through fieldassembly.net and we will try to fix it.
4. Copyright, sources and sharing
© 2026 Field Assembly LLC. The text, structure, illustrations and code of this course are copyrighted. You are welcome to use the course for your own home, share the link freely, print pages for personal use, and quote short passages with attribution. Please do not republish the course or substantial parts of it, sell it, or present it as your own.
The curriculum is original. Publicly available course outlines and descriptions from design schools were read to decide what a homeowner-level color course should cover; none of their proprietary lesson materials, workbooks or assignments were used or reproduced, and no affiliation, endorsement, accreditation or equivalence is claimed or implied. Manufacturer pages were read for product facts, which are reported as that manufacturer's statements. The source library lists every external page relied on, with the date it was read. Linked third-party material belongs to its respective owners. The self-hosted fonts (Cormorant Garamond and Inter) are used under the SIL Open Font License.
